Picasso’s original etchings for Buffon's Histoire Naturelle

(07 Sep 2004)

Picasso's Buffon is one of the greatest bestiaries of the Twentieth Century. He began these etchings in 1936 at the request of the publisher Ambrose Vollard, who sadly did not live to see their completion (he died in a road accident in 1939). Picasso had just met the printer Roger Lacourière, who introduced him to the technique of the lift-ground or sugar-lift aquatint, which makes a whole range of extremely subtle grey tones possible. He completed an etching a day. The spontaneity of the plates is attested by the freehand margins, the rapidly drawn line and the use of fingerprints for textural variety.

The bestiary was finally published in 1942. The 31 etchings were produced in an edition of 226 numbered copies. The prints offered here are from an additional copy owned by the great French publisher Henri Flammerion.
